Haven't read the original article yet (will do later). But I wanted to add to your comment, which I think is well written: David Harvey's book on postmodernism really details the political and economic structure of the mapping of identity politics onto the more fundamental neoliberal capitalism. I don't see his work quoted as often, but I'd highly recommend that one.
